In this quick article I am going to show you numerous battle-tested guidelines that you can use immediately to put your goals in life on track. At the end I will describe a tool that you can use to take your goals in life and take them to the next level.
But first--
Create Benchmarks and Milestones. We find a deep sense of inspiration in our personal victories, so make sure you plot several of them along the path to your goals in life. Measurable posts that you will pass on by and celebrate when you do.
Make a Deadline for Your Goals in Life. Your goal needs to have a finite end, otherwise when will you know you have achieved it? Create a specific date to achieve your goals in life by and it will inspire the will to act within you. Leave your goals in life open-ended, fragile to the whims of chance, and you aee leaving them in a void of uncertainty.
Welcome the Opportunities Along the Way. The path you ultimately take to achieve your goals in life may look drastically different in the end than they do today. This is okay. When we open ourselves to the new and exciting opportunities we broaden our abilities and talents, deepen our set of skills, and become more capable. Allow these moments in.
Assess Yourself Mercilessly. When trying to achieve our goals in life it is necessary to take stock of ourselves, of where we stand today and what we are going to need to make our goals in life become reality. There may be areas where you need to improve, things you are going to require, or resources you may have to pay for. Make a list of all of these and jot down several suggestions for what you are going to do for each to put yourself in the position where you can feel confidant moving forward.
Promote Your Strengths. We all have things that we are good at. Whether it's an inherent talent, a practised skill or ability, there are assets within us practically made to help us achieve our goals in life. Recognize them, and see where you can wield them. While it's important to keep an eye on our weaknesses, our strengths are our greatest sources of power.
Ask for Help. Many people would rather suffer in silence than ask others for assistance. There are undoubtedly people in your circle of peers, friends and family that have something they can offer to help you in your journey. In fact, more often then not people are incredibly supportive when you have big goals in life. We love seeing those we care about succeed, and if there is something we can do to help them we wil.
Find a Mentor. If you need assistance or coaching in a specific field that no one you know can help you with, find a mentor. You can save yourself months, even years of trial-and-error by finding someone who has been down the same road before. Attaining your goals in life is much easier when you have a well-trodden path to go down.
Avoid Feel-Good Goals in Favor of Actual Goals. Going to the running store and buying shoes is not a goal, or even really a step in your goal plan unless it is followed by immediate action (i.e. running). Most people will buy the shoes but throw them in the closet. Lately I have noticed many people using these small, feel-good goals into their action plans. For some these feel-good goals create that mental checkmark in their mind that they are acting towards their goal. Recognize the feel-good personal goals for the real ones, and always strive for the latter!
